Northern Ireland - County Down

This structure on a small hill overlooking the Donaghadee coast is called The Moat. It was built to house the explosives for the blasting involved in the construction of the harbour which dates back to 1818. The original mound was of Norman origin, when a motte and bailey stood on the site. You can see how it would have been perfect for defence or as an excellent look-out post.
